Teaching experience
I have taught in a wide variety of contexts, across a wide range of ages. I have mentored students applying to top universities, providing tailored support and practice interviews - including for successful Oxbridge admissions. I have tutored school students in specific subjects, as well as running masterclasses in history and classics for A Level students. I have taught English as a foreign language on European summer camps to 6 - 14 year old students.
I believe it is vital that tutees and mentees are stretched and challenged to improve in their specific areas of need. Improvement and genuine engagement only occur when these challenges are tailored to students’ requirements and interests. I am therefore careful to diagnose these specifics early on and respond to them continuously and flexibly, rather than imposing a particular style or template.
I also believe that real learning only takes place when grades are not the sole focus: I try to ensure that I provide students with a professional, but also an interesting, light-hearted and engaging level of interaction. It is an engaged, challenged and motivated student that emerges a more confident and impressive student. Often it is by posing that one trickier question, or pushing that thinking a little further, that real academic progress takes place. But this progress doesn't take place without a few laughs along the way!
