My general approach when explaining a new topic to a student is to find an intuitive way of understanding it and explaining it to them that way.
From experience, I have found that students do much better when they understand where equations come from rather than just simply memorising them. While technically the derivations are usually non examinable, I have found going over them is important for the student to get an intuitive understanding for them.
