Teaching experience
Qualifications include PGCE (UCL Institute of Education) and BMus First Class with Honours (King's College London). I offer tuition in instrumental playing/singing (including preparation for ABRSM examinations), ABRSM Music Theory up to Grade 5, and support with Edexcel and CIE GCSE boards, and Edexcel A-Level. I can offer Kodaly Method training to Intermediate standard, and can assist with Pre-U Music dissertations.
I am a positive and enthusiastic teacher, keen to share my passion for musical excellence with my pupils. My love of music-making was first realised when I heard the cello teacher at my Primary practising in the school hall when I was nine years old. I was amazed how one person's sound could fill such a large space! I quickly started lessons with that teacher and have never looked back.
As well as an experienced cellist (both as a soloist and and orchestral player), I now sing professionally with numerous choirs across London and Yorkshire.
My musical abilities have taken me all over the world, including Venice, Paris, Gibraltar, Milan and Hong Kong. The performing arts can open so many new doors for people, and now I want to make even more students aware that these opportunities exist.
As a private tutor, I have so far worked with students aged 5-25, with very positive feedback. For example:
'A committed teacher, Lindsey comes to her classes thoroughly prepared. She is very attentive to my needs and has accurately identified several of my vocal issues. Not only has she provided me with effective solutions in a short amount of time and in a fun and imaginative way, but she has also encouraged and inspired me to be more musical and expressive with my voice.' - Helene, singing tutee (2015)
'Our six-year-old daughter looks forward to her lessons with Lindsey and tells us that Lindsey is a kind and patient teacher. We are pleased with our daughter's enthusiasm and weekly progress, the latter being evident in her having new and progressively more complex pieces to practise. We are also confident that Lindsey incorporates a good mix of theory and practical into her lessons, which is challenging for young pupils eager to simply learn to play. We would certainly recommend Lindsey to other parents seeking high-quality piano tuition for their child(ren).' - Sarah, parent of piano tutee (2018)
***PLEASE NOTE: if you are seeking cello lessons, you must be able to provide your own instrument. If you are seeking piano lessons to take place at your home, you must own a piano or good quality keyboard***
My approach to music tuition is all about striking that balance between having fun and making a rewarding amount of progress. There is absolutely no point in playing a musical instrument if the experience does not bring you joy, but at the same time we must realise that nothing worthwhile is ever without its challenges, and this is true of instrumental tuition.
All too often, students come to me for the first time, complaining that they can't seem to fix a particular section of music, despite having played the piece over and over again at home. The reason they are making no progress is because they have been practising their mistake, rather than fixing it! We must learn to be musical doctors, diagnosing the root of each problem we have, so that we can fix it as quickly and easily as possible. Once students come to realise this, their music practice immediately becomes less daunting - and much more fun!
