Dennis

My name is Dennis and I am an incoming second-year BSc Economics student at University College London. My main subjects are Maths, Economics, Statistics and Eleven Plus practice. My lessons are usually exam focused, as well as being student-driven.

I have been a private maths tutor for over 20 students in the past year with well over 200 hours of tutoring experience. As an Elite Maths Tutor at school, I helped students with practice for UKMT competitions. Under my tutelage, 4 students at my school qualified for the UKMT Intermediate Olympiad, which you qualify for by being one of the top 500 students internationally from your school year. In my previous tutoring experiences, I have always asked my students to send me topics that they would like me to teach them a few days before the lesson, so you can get the best value out of tutoring. Personally, I think that it is particularly important that a student in engaged with what they are learning, as if they are not they will be less willing to instil the effort levels outside of our lessons. So first I aim to engage them with the subject - I will not force them to like it, as they are entitled to have their own likes and dislikes, however, I will aim to increase their interest in the subject.

Personally I feel that this will lead to greater commitment to the subject, which will be the first step - and one of the most important steps - in helping them achieve their goals. I will make sure to teach them the content requested, while continously asking them for reassurances in whether they understand what I am talking about. After going through some examples with them, and when they say they are fully ready, I will give them questions for them to practice on. I will remain there so they can ask me if they have any doubts on the questions they are doing. Finally, I will ask them to go through their solutions and working, as it is important to see if they truly understand the topic at hand, particularly at GCSE and KS3 level.
