Teaching experience
I have been tutoring for over two years. During this time I have worked with over 50 students studying maths, further maths, and physics at both GCSE and A level, as well as students preparing for university admissions in maths, physics, and engineering. I enjoy working with passionate and ambitious students eager to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts they have learned in school.
In short, I strongly believe in the learning-by-doing approach to tutoring. Before each session, I will set a range of questions for the student to work on; typically, these will include a selection of standard questions for the student level, followed by a handful of extension questions (many of which I have written myself) designed to help the student build on their problem-solving skills and engage more deeply with the topics at hand.
I aim to make sessions as collaborative as possible; I like to allow students the freedom to approach each question in the way they see fit, and then I will ask open-ended questions to help guide the student to a solution. This approach promotes independent thought and I have found that it aids students ability to tackle more complex questions and reflect on their methods.
As part of my PhD, I constantly engage with maths and physics concepts I learnt at school and university. I find it incredibly rewarding to put my existing knowledge into practice to solve practical problems. I aspire to emulate this during my tutoring so I regularly encourage students to think about and discuss the practical applications of the concepts they are learning.
