Frequently asked questions
What question do you need help with?
TeachTutti reviews all your questions to keep this page up-to-date. The questions we have answered below include: quality of tutors and tuition, the process for booking and paying for lessons, the range of subjects taught (Piano, English, Maths, and so on).
If your question isn't discussed, please contact TeachTutti.
Each tutor charges his or her own rate for lessons depending on their experience and qualifications. When choosing a tutor it is worth looking carefully at what level of experience they have in the subject as well as the level of teaching experience they have. TeachTutti classifies certain tutors as Toptutors based on the quality of their teaching and the value for money that they offer.
TeachTutti provides lessons on any subject for which there is a demand. As the name suggests, TeachTutti began as a music education service, but has expanded to cover all subjects that students want to learn, including popular subjects like Maths and English. These subjects can be taught online and most tutors offer this option. You can also choose to have lessons in your own home or the home of the tutor: it all depends on what suits you best.
You can pay by debit/credit card with Stripe or by direct debit with GoCardless. A handling fee and service fee are included in the total cost.
When you book a tutor, you need to select if the booking is Ongoing or Fixed. Ongoing bookings continue for the foreseeable future with no end date. This is useful if you’re making a long-term commitment to your study, such as learning a musical instrument. Fixed tuition is for a set number of lessons before the booking is closed. This is helpful if tuition is short-term, such as GCSE exam preparation. Follow the link to learn more about booking types.
The first lesson payment is not taken until the lesson date. After the first lesson, payment is made in a rolling four-lesson block.
Payment for each block is only taken when all lessons from the previous block have been taken. You will be notified when your tutor submits a lesson claim.
You can search for a tutor in your chosen subject using the search bar in the topbar or on the home page. You can communicate directly with a tutor by sending a message on their profile page, such as to ask about their teaching style or their ability to meet your learning needs.
When you are happy, you can book directly using the calendar on their profile to select a lesson date and time. Once you have done this please await confirmation from the tutor. Remember that your payment will only be taken when the lesson has started.
In order to qualify to teach students with TeachTutti, a prospective tutor must submit an enhanced DBS check (the Disclosure and Barring Service checks the background of all individuals) and evidence of the qualifications that the tutor claims to have. These are reviewed by TeachTutti and confirmed before the tutor is listed in search results. You can rest assured that all tutors with TeachTutti are fully vetted and qualified to provide lessons for you or your children.
Toptutor status recognises and rewards our most experienced and highly reviewed tutors. We assess tutors that fit Toptutor criteria on a regular basis to see whether to award or retain this status.
Toptutors are proven, trusted tutors with TeachTutti and have greater visibility in search results. Follow the link for more information about Toptutors.
Notify your tutor directly to cancel a lesson. You must give at least 24 hours notice. If not, the tutor is entitled to claim for the lesson.
You can end a booking with a tutor at any time from your bookings page. Your tutor will be notified and the booking will end when all outstanding lessons in your block have been taken. These lessons are not refundable unless you have a complaint about the quality of tuition.
If you have any concerns with your tutor it is best to discuss these directly at the earliest opportunity. Tutors are very familiar with the common concerns of students and students’ parents, such as the pace of progress or the student’s readiness to take exams. Tutors are also able to adapt their teaching style to suit your learning needs if you ask. Tutors will not take offence at being asked questions and will often have been asked similar questions many times before.
If you do not want to raise a question with your tutor, you can ask TeachTutti directly or by chatting directly with the TeachTutti support team in livechat.
Lessons take place at a date and time that you and your tutor are available. In booking the first lesson you can access the tutor’s calendar and choose a time that suits you – the tutor will then confirm your booking request. After this lesson you will arrange following lessons directly with your tutor.
Regular lessons typically take place at the same time every week, coinciding with school or work times and the teaching times of the tutors (tutors tend to be busiest in the early evenings and at weekends). You can also schedule lessons with the tutor whenever you choose, as long as he or she is available. For example, students often arrange additional lessons to help prepare for exams, or will arrange virtual lessons while on holiday or working away from home and revert to in-person tuition when they are back in a normal routine. The aim of TeachTutti is to provide a learning environment that matches the learning needs of the student and we try to make it as flexible as possible for you.
Lessons can take place at the student's home, at the home of the tutor, or online. Lesson pricing will normally vary depending on the location. The purpose of these different lesson locations is to provide maximum flexibility for the student. For example, students sometimes prefer to have lessons online until they get to know the tutor. Many tutors offer all three options for teaching – online, at the tutor’s home or at the student’s home – but not all do and it's advisable to check the tutor's profile.
