Having the opportunity to learn from a tutor in a 1-to-1 environment is such a great chance to learn and progress skills. Tutors are experts in their field, therefore they can provide help, support, and the ability to fill any gaps in knowledge. However, like with most services, it's always a two-way street, and the best results come from working together to reach a common goal.
So, how do you get the most from your tutoring lessons?
Keep notes
Keeping notes on each of your tutoring sessions is a great way of remembering what you actually learned in a session. Tutoring sessions are great, but sometimes they can be so packed with information and learning that could potentially forget 80% of what you learned within the first 10 minutes of the lesson ending. `keeping notes is a great way of keeping track of what you've learned, so you can go back and revisit the information, and recap it.
Ask questions
If you're not sure about something or need further explanation, ask questions. After all, you're paying for the tutors' time, and in turn, for them to share their knowledge. Ask questions on topics that you don't fully understand, ask their opinion on how you could improve, and ask them tips for certain processes.
Engage
As mentioned above, tuition sessions are most effective when both the student and the tutor are engaging and working together. Coming to the tutoring sessions prepared, on time, and having all the materials you need will set you up for a good lesson. Then ensuring you are present and engaging with the learning will result in progression and better subject knowledge, quicker.
Revisit previous lessons
Practicing what you've learned will mean a better understanding in the long run. No student can immediately learn all of the skills they've learned, apply them, and achieve great results every time. Learning requires effort and repetition. Putting extra effort into learning outside of the lessons, and revisiting what you've learned will benefit you in the long run.
Be realistic and patient
It's a good idea to set a benchmark for your knowledge and understanding before tuition begins. Maybe take a test or ask your tutor to grade you before they do any tuition, then you can accurately monitor your progress. Learning doesn't simply happen overnight, and it's important to be patient with yourself and your tutor. Agree upon realistic goals to aim towards, and ensure these are achievable. Taking into consideration, other learning, clubs/ hobbies, and just general life.
